Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Lead Substation Engineer in New Jersey to apply expertise in protective relaying and controls for HV/EHV substations. You will lead design teams, develop relay philosophies, and coordinate across client, vendor, and internal teams while guiding junior staff.

The role offers a hybrid work arrangement with three days in the office and two remote days, plus relocation assistance depending on location. Travel to client and vendor sites may be required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science Engineering degree required.
• 10+ years experience focusing on protection/control/telecommunications for HV substations; including design, installation, and coordination.
• PE license required.
• Experience as firm/client liaison in a lead engineering role.
• Experience writing support documentation for relay calculations.
• Knowledge of design techniques and standards for engineering plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
• Proficiency with MS Office applications.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead an engineering and design team on substation modifications and upgrades.
• Prepare relaying philosophies and configurations, oversee I/O assignments and diagrams.
• Guide junior and senior engineers in protection and controls design.
• Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve engineering issues.
• Design single line diagrams, relaying and metering diagrams.
• Prepare engineering studies for client/peer review.
• Review others' work including calculations and drawings.
• Coordinate with engineers, project managers, clients, and suppliers.
• Review existing facilities to propose upgrades and present findings.
• Mentor less experienced engineers; share knowledge via Communities of Practice.
• Possibly travel to client/vendor offices for design reviews and field verification.
