Job summary

Sargent & Lundy seeks a Lead System Protection Engineer to join our Grid Services team. The role focuses on protection philosophies, relay settings, and power system studies, with a secondary role in reviewing high‑voltage substation P&C design.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program (or equivalent).
• 10+ years of experience in system protection engineering for transmission/substation projects.
• Strong background in protection philosophies and relay logic.
• Experience with CAPE and/or ASPEN for protection studies.
• Experience using relay configuration tools (SEL AcSELerator, EnerVista, OEM platforms).
• Experience managing settings data in relay/asset databases.
• Ability to interpret P&C drawings and comply with IEEE/ANSI/NERC standards.

Responsibilities

• Lead development and application of protection philosophies and settings for transmission lines, transformers, buses, breakers, and capacitor/reactor banks.
• Perform short‑circuit analysis, relay coordination, and time‑current curve development.
• Configure, set, and troubleshoot microprocessor‑based protective relays using vendor software.
• Manage relay records and settings in Powerbase or similar databases.
• Support event analysis, relay testing, and misoperation investigations.
• Develop and review protection and control design documents in coordination with substation teams.
• Provide system protection requirements and markups to guide P&C design and commissioning.
