Job summary

WSP in Tucson, AZ is seeking a Lead Civil/Geotechnical Engineer to join our US Mine Waste team. You will lead civil design for mine waste containment and heap leach facilities, and manage geotechnical projects across multiple states.

You will oversee field investigations, analyses, and design documentation, while guiding junior engineers and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams. Occasional travel may be required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering, or closely related discipline.
• 7 to 10 years of relevant post education experience in engineering and geotechnical design.
• Engineer license required.
• Experience with tailings management and heap leach facility design in mining.
• Sound knowledge in soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering.
• Demonstrated client liaison and business development skills.
• Project management experience with small to mid-level projects including scoping and tracking hours/expenses.
• Strong communication skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences.
• Self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization.
• Independent work with guidance to juniors; adherence to QA/QC.
• Proficient with design software: MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS.
• Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
• Coordinate and manage subcontractors safely and effectively.
• Uphold safety policies and company conduct.
• Occasional travel may be required.

Responsibilities

• Lead civil design of mine waste containment and heap leach facilities including layout, site selection, analyses, and specs.
• Manage mine waste geotechnical projects including field investigations, lab testing, data interpretation, and analyses.
• Direct complex geotechnical analyses focusing on soil mechanics, stability, seepage, deposition modeling, and run-out analyses.
• Manage projects per client scopes; deliver high-quality reports on time and within budget.
• Contribute to client relationships and business development activities.
• Lead multi-disciplinary project teams and collaborate with other engineers and planners.
• Support proposals and design work packages in response to client needs.
• Mentor and supervise junior engineers.
• Stay current with geotechnical techniques and practices.
• Adhere to QA/QC and company policies; collaborate with authorities on funded projects.
• Travel as project requirements dictate.
