Job summary

Capital One seeks a senior professional to lead enterprise ontologies and data modeling, shaping the data strategy and semantic technology across multiple business lines. You will define roadmaps, mentor junior staff, and collaborate with technology and ML teams to deploy standardized ontologies and data models.

With a strong background in W3C standards and linked data tools, you will drive cross-functional initiatives, measure outcomes, and communicate value to senior stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in information science, computer science, engineering, library science, ontology, semantics or computational linguistics.
• 4+ years’ experience in a metadata field (ontology, taxonomy, semantics or computational linguistics).
• 4+ years’ experience or training in W3C standards (JSON, XML, RDF, RDFS, OWL, SKOS).
• 4+ years’ experience or training in ontology and linked data tools (Protégé, TopQuadrant, PoolParty, Stardog, AnzoGraph, Neptune, Data.World).
• 4+ years’ experience or training with SQL or SPARQL.
• Preferred: Master’s degree or PhD in information science, computer science, engineering, library science, ontology, semantics or computational linguistics.
• Understanding of ontologies, controlled vocabularies and thesauri.
• Familiarity with graph databases and technologies.
• Familiarity with Python or R.
• Familiarity with JSON, OpenAPI/YAML, AVRO.
• Familiarity with Agile principles, processes, and methodologies.
• Familiarity with Amazon Web Services.
• Strong project management experience.
• Ability to work individually and with a team to meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and maintain enterprise ontologies supporting Capital One’s Data Strategy.
• Develop domain ontologies across Capital One Lines of Business and Functions.
• Partner with Technology, Machine Learning, and other teams to develop and integrate semantic technology into products and services.
• Define actionable problem statements, acceptance criteria, success metrics, and measurable outcomes.
• Own and prioritize the near-term Ontology and Data Modeling roadmap.
• Create reusable, extensible, and resilient capabilities.
• Develop and communicate a 6-month vision to senior stakeholders and partner teams.
• Lead recruiting, mentoring, and development of junior ontology and data modeling associates.
• Manage teams developing, implementing, and governing ontologies and optimized data models.
• Contribute to data integration and mapping efforts.
• Communicate and advocate the value of ontologies, semantics, and standardization across the business.
• Monitor competitor and industry developments.
• Adhere to W3C ontology standards including RDF, RDFS, OWL, SKOS, and SHACL.
• Develop standards, guidelines, and direction for ontology, data modeling, semantics, and data standardization.
