Job summary

Capital One seeks a Senior Ontology/Data Modeling Specialist to develop and govern ontologies and optimized data models with cross‑functional teams. You will contribute to data integration, harmonize domain ontologies, and advocate semantic standardization across business units.

You will partner with Technology, ML, and Product teams to embed semantics into products and services, analyze knowledge organization strategies, and test new models. Strong written and verbal communication are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in information science, computer science, engineering, library science, ontology, semantics, computational linguistics or a combination
• At least 2 years’ experience in a metadata field or a masters’ degree in a listed field
• Experience with W3C standards including RDF, RDFS, OWL, SKOS
• Experience with ontology and linked data tools (Protégé, TopQuadrant, PoolParty, Stardog, AnzoGraph, Neptune, Data.World)
• Experience with SQL, SPARQL or a combination
• Understanding of ontology development and controlled vocabularies and thesauri
• Familiarity with graph databases and technologies
• Familiarity with Python or R
• Familiarity with JSON, OpenAPI/YAML, and AVRO
• Familiarity with Agile methodologies
• Familiarity with AWS
• Detail-oriented with problem-solving ability
• Strong reading and writing skills
• Strong project management and communication skills

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and govern ontologies and optimized data models with stakeholders to improve data discoverability, search, and product development
• Contribute to data integration and mapping efforts to harmonize data with Capital One’s upper and domain ontologies
• Communicate and advocate the value of ontologies, semantics, and standardization across the business
• Partner with Technology, Machine Learning, Product, and other Capital One teams to develop and integrate semantics into products and services
• Analyze and implement knowledge organization strategies using machine learning, ontology management, and semantic enrichment tools
• Maintain awareness of competitor and industry developments related to ontology use, knowledge organization, data modeling, and machine learning
• Understand and adhere to W3C ontology standards, including RDF, RDFS, OWL, SKOS, and SHACL
• Develop standards, guidelines, and direction for ontology, data modeling, semantics, and Data Standardization
• Test and troubleshoot new or updated models and systems
• Manage and oversee other projects assigned by Product Owners and Supervisors
