Job summary

AeroVironment in California seeks a Principal Software Engineer to lead embedded software for unmanned and robotic systems. You will design, develop, test and debug software for flight-ready devices, guiding cross‑functional teams and ensuring software quality across life cycles.

You should have 12–15 years in the field, strong Python, C, C++11, OpenCL, and experience with Visual Studio, Eclipse, and common protocols. Occasional travel and ability to work in high‑stakes environments are expected.

Qualifications

• BS degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related field.
• 12–15 years of relevant experience.
• Troubleshooting systems; proficient with Python, C, C++11, C++ STL and/or OpenCL.
• Familiar with Visual Studio, Eclipse or similar IDE and defect tracking tools.
• Experience with RS-485/232, CAN, I2C, SPI, USB protocols.
• Occasional travel for testing equipment.

Responsibilities

• Writes and tests software to support integration of sensors and embedded processors into aircraft or robotic systems.
• Designs software for prototypes and products using AeroVironment tools; ensure configuration control.
• Leads in writing system requirements, test plans, and validation testing of software.
• Estimates time to develop software and scopes development with management to fit timelines.
• Works with other engineering disciplines; supports production transitions and certification.
• Develops proof of concept demonstrations and conducts design reviews.
