Job summary

AV is seeking a Principal Embedded Software Engineer to lead the development of unmanned and robotic systems for defense and commercial applications. You will design, code, test, and debug software for embedded devices and flight test environments, integrating sensors and processors into aircraft and robotic platforms.

The role requires strong Python/C++ experience, extensive embedded systems knowledge, and leadership to drive rapid prototyping, software validation, and production transitions

Qualifications

• BS degree in Computer Science/Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering or related field or equivalent
• 12–15 years of relevant experience
• Proficient with Python, C, C++11, C++ STL and/or OpenCL
• Experience with Visual Studio, Eclipse or similar IDE and defect tracking tools
• Familiarity with RS-485, RS-232, CAN, I2C, SPI, USB
• Strong mathematical and analytical skills
• Willingness to travel for testing
• Ability to work long hours in field test environments

Responsibilities

• Writes and tests software to support integration of sensors and embedded processors into aircraft or robotic systems
• Designs software for prototypes and products using AeroVironment tools; ensure configuration control
• Leads in writing system requirements and test plans; assists with hardware selection
• Estimates development time and scopes depth to fit timelines and budget
• Collaborates with other engineering disciplines; supports production transition and certification
• Develops proof-of-concept demonstrations and conducts design reviews
