Job summary

AeroVironment, Inc. is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (Embedded) to develop software for unmanned and robotic systems. You will write and test software for embedded devices and aircraft payloads, integrating sensors and processors while ensuring software quality and maintainability.

Responsibilities include design and implementation for prototypes, hardware consideration, and supporting flight tests. Travel may be required; ITAR compliance and security clearances are considered.

Qualifications

• BS degree in Computer Science/Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, or related field or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
• Minimum of 5-8 years of relevant experience
• Expert with Python, C, C++11, C++ STL and/or OpenCL
• Demonstrated knowledge of Visual Studio, Eclipse or similar IDE and defect tracking tools
• Experienced with common protocols such as RS-485, RS-232, CAN, I2C, SPI, USB
• Demonstrated mathematical and analytical skills
• Periodic travel likely for testing equipment at approved locations
• Development may require long irregular hours around deadlines, weekends, and some holidays in field test environments
• Advanced degree preferred
• Experience with STM32 family processors and RTOS on those processors desired
• Experience with Video4Linux and modifying Ubuntu/Linux kernels desired
• Experience developing drivers for Linux/ARM and ROS desired
• Experience with Ardupilot or PX4 open source autopilots desired
• Hands-on design/build experience with UAVs or similar systems
• Strong communication and teamwork skills
• Willingness to learn and adapt in fast-paced environments

Responsibilities

• Writes and tests software to support integration of sensors and embedded processors into aircraft or robotic systems
• Designs and implements software for prototypes and products using AeroVironment tools and practices
• Ensures good configuration control and software management
• Assists in writing system requirements, test plans, and validation testing of software
• Assists with hardware selection and recommends processing, memory, and storage needs
• Supports rapid prototyping and conceptual testing with project management to fit timelines
• Provides development updates and milestone estimates
• Troubleshoots complex systems from a software perspective with hardware diagnostics
• Supports flight test operations
• Supports transition of development software to production environments and certification
• Participates in multi-disciplinary teams
• Develops proof-of-concept demonstrations
• Conducts and supports design reviews
• Works on complex issues requiring in-depth analysis
• Exercises judgment in selecting methods and evaluation criteria
• Other duties as assigned
