Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Corrections is seeking a Supervisory Security Officer to oversee the housing-unit security, supervise staff, and ensure custody and control of inmates. You will lead routine inspections, investigate misconduct, assist with counts, and evaluate staff performance.

The role requires training: eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training and a high school diploma with related experience (a bachelor’s degree may substitute).

Qualifications

• High school diploma and relevant experience; bachelor’s degree may substitute.
• 18 months experience in correctional/security/military/police work; degree may substitute half.
• Must complete SCDC basic supervisory training within 6 months.

Responsibilities

• Oversee security of housing units and custody of inmates.
• Perform routine inspections of living areas for safety and sanitation.
• Conduct investigations of misconduct and prepare reports.
• Assist in inmate and staff counts and supervise subordinate personnel.
• Counsel, train, and evaluate staff; recommend disciplinary actions.
• Prepare required reports and perform shift lieutenant duties when needed.
