Qualifications

• Must complete eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.
• State minimum: high school diploma and relevant experience; bachelor's degree may substitute.
• SCDC minimum: high school diploma + 18 months in correctional/security/military/police; degree may substitute half of experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete basic supervisory course within six months.

Responsibilities

• Under the general supervision of the shift lieutenant, supervise security assigned to housing units and custody of inmates.
• Makes routine inspections of living areas for security, safety, and sanitation standards.
• Conducts investigations of alleged misconduct by inmates and security personnel.
• Assists in conducting formal and informal counts.
• Supervises the job performance, conduct and appearance and prepares employee evaluations.
• Counsels, recommends disciplinary action, and trains subordinate staff to required standards of performance.
• Prepares reports as needed.
• Performs duties of shift lieutenant when necessary.
