Job summary

State of South Carolina seeks a supervisor for housing unit security to oversee inmates and subordinate staff. The role includes supervising custody, conducting inspections, and supporting investigations into misconduct.

You will assist in counts, evaluate staff performance, and provide training and counseling as needed. The position requires completing SCDC Basic Training (8 weeks) and meeting minimum education requirements.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; related degree may substitute for experience.
• Experience in correctional, security, military, or police work preferred.
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete basic supervisory course within 6 months.

Responsibilities

• Supervises subordinate security and custody of inmates in housing units.
• M akes routine inspections of living areas for security, safety and sanitation.
• Conducts investigations of alleged misconduct by inmates and staff in the area of responsibility.
• Assists in formal and informal inmate counts.
• Supervises job performance, conduct and appearance; prepares evaluations.
• Counsels, recommends disciplinary action, and trains subordinate staff.
• Prepares reports as needed or required.
• Performs duties of Shift Lieutenant when necessary.
