Job summary

State of South Carolina Department of Corrections is seeking a security supervisor to oversee personnel and inmate custody in the Housing Unit. Under the Housing Lieutenant, you will supervise performance, enforce standards, and coordinate shift activities to ensure safe operations.

Applicants need a high school diploma with relevant experience; a related degree may substitute for experience. Completion of eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training is required on hire.

Qualifications

• A high school diploma with relevant security experience.
• A related degree may substitute for part of the required experience.
• Certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete basic supervisory training within six months.
• Eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training on hire.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the supervision, custody and control of inmates assigned to the unit.
• Supervise job performance and appearance of assigned security personnel.
• Assist with preparation of employee evaluations, disciplinary action requests, counseling, etc.
• Assist in conducting briefing with officers at the beginning of shift.
• Keep subordinates informed of all changes affecting inmates and operations.
• Make random checks to ensure duty performance is within standards.
• Inspect work areas and security devices to ensure proper operation and standards.
• Assist in conducting counts.
• Investigate complaints.
• Perform duties of the Housing Lieutenant in his/her absence.
• Maintain OSHA and safety standards.
