Position Summary
The Sommelier is responsible for delivering knowledgeable, personalized wine service and guiding guests through the restaurant's wine list, pairings, and offerings.
Scope
This position reports to the Head Sommelier and Beverage Manager and has no formal supervisory responsibility, though the Sommelier may informally guide Servers and Captains on wine service during a shift.
The Sommelier exercises independent judgment in guest-facing wine recommendations and service within the established wine list and cellar procedures; decisions involving list changes, purchasing, pricing, or significant guest issues are escalated to the Head Sommelier.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Guest Experience & Wine Service
- Provide personalized wine recommendations and tableside service to guests.
- Guide guests through wine selections, food pairings, and tasting menu pairings.
- Present, open, and pour wine according to established service standards.
- Engage guests with genuine, knowledgeable, and approachable hospitality.
- Support VIP guests, wine dinners, tastings, and special hospitality events.
- Maintain a visible and attentive presence in the dining room during service.
Wine Program Support
- Maintain thorough knowledge of the restaurant's wine list, vintages, producers, and tasting notes.
- Assist the Head Sommelier with wine storage, organization, rotation, and cellar management.
- Assist with receiving, labeling, and properly storing wine deliveries.
- Participate in staff tastings and ongoing wine education.
- Report inventory discrepancies, damaged bottles, or storage concerns to the Head Sommelier.
Team Support & Education
- Support the Head Sommelier in training and coaching Servers and Captains on wine knowledge and service standards.
- Communicate effectively with front-of-house and back-of-house teams to ensure smooth service.
- Model professionalism, hospitality, and product knowledge for the broader service team.
- Assist with side work, opening, and closing duties related to the wine and beverage program.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Head Sommelier or management.
Food Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all New York State liquor laws and responsible alcohol service practices.
- Maintain Department of Health sanitation standards in all wine service and storage areas.
- Properly store, label, and rotate wine and beverage products.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of sommelier or advanced wine service experience in an upscale or fine dining restaurant.
- Strong working knowledge of Old World and New World wines, with familiarity in Spanish, Italian, and French wines preferred.
- Wine certification such as CMS, WSET, or equivalent preferred but not required.
- Excellent guest service, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to confidently present, describe, and recommend wine to guests of varying experience levels.
- Experience with Toast POS or similar restaurant POS systems preferred.
- Professional appearance and polished demeanor.
- Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, including cases of wine.
- Ability to frequently move throughout multiple levels of the restaurant, including going up and down stairs.
- Ability to bend, reach, push, pull, and safely move wine inventory throughout the restaurant and cellar.
Work Environment
Work is performed in the dining room, wine cellar, and storage areas, combining direct guest-facing service with wine handling and light physical work. Requires flexible availability including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
