Job summary

The Mutual Group seeks a Corporate Counsel to lead regulatory, compliance, and corporate law initiatives. This role provides strategic legal counsel to senior management and cross-functional teams, advising on employment, contracts, IP, and marketing compliance while mitigating risk and ensuring ethical standards.

Responsibilities span HR advisory, litigation coordination, IP management, marketing review, and policy governance, with hybrid/in-office training for Iowa-based staff.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing.
• Minimum of 5 years of legal experience with strong focus on corporate law matters.
• Experience in a corporate legal department or law firm serving regulated industries.
• Experience in insurance or similar regulated industries preferred.
• Strong understanding of federal and state regulatory frameworks.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, negotiation and leadership skills.
• Proven ability to manage complex legal issues and provide strategic counsel.
• Experience with employment law.

Responsibilities

• Serve as day-to-day legal advisor to HR on employment matters.
• Monitor federal and state employment laws and advise leadership on impacts.
• Advise on employee relations, performance management, investigations, leaves and terminations.
• Provide guidance on 401(k) and employee benefits matters.
• Review and update employment-related policies and forms.
• Assist with corporate litigation and coordinate with outside counsel.
• Manage subpoenas and legal requests; coordinate holds with stakeholders.
• Oversee IP portfolio, including trademarks and copyrights via outside counsel.
• Advise Marketing and Corporate Communications on legal and regulatory aspects of collateral.
• Develop risk-based approaches to communications and marketing reviews.
• Oversee corporate policy framework and governance processes.
• Review routine corporate agreements and provide guidance on contractual risks.
