Job summary

Downtown Women’s Center in Chicago is seeking a Generalist - Human Resources to support employee relations, investigations, performance management, policy implementation, and compliance with labor laws across the organization.

You will collaborate with the Talent Acquisition Partner on recruitment and onboarding, coach managers on HR matters, and maintain confidential personnel records while upholding a culture of transparency.

Qualifications

• Broad knowledge of employment law, worker’s compensation, investigations, employee relations, safety, and training.
• Excellent computer skills in a Windows environment; must include Excel and HRIS proficiency.
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication; ability to explain benefits, legal and personnel issues clearly.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with sound judgment.
• Strong organizational and time management skills with problem-solving ability.
• Curious mindset for continuous improvement.
• Demonstrated team player with ability to interface with leadership and staff.

Responsibilities

• Administers HR plans and procedures for all personnel; assists in policy development.
• Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local laws and keeps records.
• Conducts confidential investigations into grievances and workplace incidents.
• Supports recruitment and onboarding with Talent Acquisition Partner.
• Coordinates leave administration, benefits communication, and workers’ compensation.
• Prepares reports (EEO-1, pay data) and conducts HR audits.
• Coaches managers on employee relations, performance management and policy enforcement.
• Onsite presence three to four days per week; supports cross-functional teams.
