Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a skilled equipment operator to support highway and bridge maintenance. You will operate heavy equipment including excavators, graders, and loader-tractors, perform routine maintenance, and assist with safety practices and traffic control.

Responsibilities include coordinating with crew for work zones, maintaining records, and assisting in snow removal and emergency operations as needed.

Qualifications

• One year of related work experience; or relevant education may substitute for the experience requirement.
• Valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
• Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of placement.
• Physical demands include bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, lifting up to 50 lbs.
• Occasional extended hours or 12-hour shifts during inclement weather.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment such as slope mower, lowboy tractor, tractor with ditcher loader, excavator, motor grader, and backhoe in maintenance operations.
• Use pipe washer equipment to clean drainage ditches and pipes.
• Install or repair sideline and crossline pipe, driveways, and clear rights-of-way.
• Perform daily preventative maintenance: grease, check fluids, belts, tires, and leaks.
• Assist with safety practices, flagging, and proper PPE for crew members.
• Coordinate placement of traffic control devices per Work Zone guidelines.
• Maintain daily work records (HMS, maintenance requests) and safety inspections.
• Operate snow/ice removal equipment (salt brine systems, dump trucks, plow) as needed.
• Assist in emergency/weather operations; may require extended hours.
