Job summary

State of South Carolina, Department of Transportation, seeks a skilled heavy equipment operator for bridge construction, repair, and preservation across the state highway system. You will operate a mini excavator, bucket truck, snooper, and other heavy equipment in diverse tasks including grading, concrete work, painting, and steel placement.

Two years of related work experience or an approved equivalence is required, along with a valid driver's license.

Qualifications

• Two years of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Must obtain Class A CDL within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Performs skilled manual labor and operates equipment for bridges on the state highway system.
• Includes grading, mowing, sweeping, setting forms, concrete work, painting and steel placement.
• Operates specialized equipment such as snooper and crawler, and participates in bridge maintenance.
• Sets up maintenance work zones per the SCDOT manual and field guide.
• May work extended hours or 12-hour shifts in emergencies or inclement weather.
