Nelnet is seeking a Data Engineer to own the data foundation for GenAI solutions in higher education and SLED. You will design and maintain data pipelines on Google Cloud, ensure data is classified and access-controlled for AI use, and collaborate with GCP/Gemini teams to deliver reliable data for agentic solutions.

The role emphasizes data governance, FERPA awareness, and scalable ELT/ETL processes, with a hybrid remote-friendly model and a compensation range of $115,000–$135,000.

Qualifications

Hands-on data pipelines and ELT/ETL on a major cloud platform (BigQuery, Dataflow).
Experience with data governance, classification tooling (Dataplex, DLP).
Strong SQL and Python skills for pipeline development.

Responsibilities

Design, build, and maintain data pipelines using BigQuery and Dataflow.
Ingest, transform, and serve client data for GenAI use cases with ELT/ETL processes.
Monitor pipeline reliability, performance, and cost; optimize resources.
Classify data with Dataplex and DLP to identify FERPA-sensitive records before AI use.
Define data access controls and governance for education and public sector data.
