Job summary

City Year AmeriCorps members volunteer as student success coaches and mentors in schools, focusing on helping students achieve academic progress, improve attendance, and build positive behaviors. Training occurs in 2–4 weeks at the start, with ongoing collaboration with teachers and school staff to support students throughout the day.

Members work with teachers on in-class and after-school programs, developing literacy and math skills and creating welcoming classroom environments.

Qualifications

• Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident (Authorization to work in the U.S. is not sufficient). Those with DACA status unfortunately are not eligible at this time
• Be 17-25 by July 1, 2025
• Have a GED or high school diploma, some college experience, or college degree
• Have served no more than three terms in an AmeriCorps state or national program

Responsibilities

• Coach and mentor students 1:1 and in small groups
• Develop literacy and/or math skills through varied activities
• Create and implement a behavior management system for students
• Develop interpersonal skills through daily practice and reflection
• Collaborate with teachers to collect, analyze, and monitor student progress
• Create an engaging, safe classroom space in collaboration with the teacher
• Support extended day and virtual programming before, during and after school
