Job summary

North Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking inspectors/technicians to assist in the examination of roadways and structures, perform calculations, and conduct materials testing under supervision. Responsibilities include collecting weigh tickets, maintaining daily records, and preparing monthly estimates for highway projects.

Qualified candidates will have a high school diploma, solid math skills, and the ability to read plans and LR&SC specs.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• Math skills in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry and ability to apply formulas.
• Proficient with iPad and Office apps.
• Ability to work independently and use good judgment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Able to read roadway, bridge and structure plans and specs.
• Must walk uneven terrain and stand up to 12 hours occasionally.
• Valid driver’s license with clean record.

Responsibilities

• Assist in inspection of roadways and structures and perform calculations under supervision.
• Perform materials sampling and testing; collect weigh tickets and conduct roadway tests.
• Monitor and perform inspection work on highway projects; maintain daily records and prepare monthly estimates.
• Take field measurements and compute contract pay quantities.
• Read plans and blueprints and interpret specifications.
