Job summary

Construction Material Testing is seeking a 3D scanning technician to operate handheld scanners on live construction sites and process data into deliverables for clients. You will scan rebar, embeds, corroded pipes, and machine parts, then register, clean, and export meshes and CAD-ready data using Artec Studio.

You'll travel to regional hubs, work outdoors on site, and contribute to deviation maps, reports, and scan-to-CAD files while maintaining chain-of-custody and safety procedures.

Qualifications

• Hands-on experience operating a handheld structured-light or laser scanner on real projects.
• Working knowledge of Artec Studio or comparable scan-processing software; mesh cleanup, registration, and export.
• Familiarity with CAD and with reading structural or fabrication drawings.
• Comfortable on active construction sites and in industrial plants; able to carry equipment, climb, and work outdoors.
• Valid driver's license with an acceptable record.
• Able to travel and fly with equipment as assigned.
• Experience with scan-to-CAD or metrology reporting is a plus.
• ACI, NICET, or ICC certifications a plus – sponsorship available.

Responsibilities

• Plan and execute handheld 3D scans of rebar and embeds before concrete placement, failed and damaged structures, corroded pipe and tanks, fabricated steel and precast, machine parts, and modular units.
• Control drift on large objects with reference features, tape-measure backbones, and overlapping zones.
• Verify capture completeness on site before leaving.
• Process scans in Artec Studio: registration, fusion, mesh cleanup, texture, and export to STL, OBJ, E57, and CAD formats.
• Produce deviation color maps, measurement reports, crack maps, pit-depth tables, and anchor bolt coordinate reports against drawings or CAD.
• Build scan-to-CAD solids for reverse engineering and fit-up checks, or hand clean meshes to the modeling team.
• Document capture procedure, equipment settings, and chain of custody on forensic matters.
• Keep the scanner, batteries, and calibration records in order.
• Coordinate access, permits, and safety with superintendents and plant contacts.
• Travel to regional hubs as assigned.
