Norfolk State University is seeking an Athletic Event Worker to support the execution of university athletic events and daily facility operations. The role involves assisting with ticket sales, ushering, parking, and venue maintenance, and may include security and event-support duties.
The position is temporary/part-time with a focus on availability during the 2026 football season and other NSU athletic events. Candidates should be prepared for evenings, weekends, and variable schedules.
Athletic Event Worker – Temporary/Part-Time Position Summary Reporting to Norfolk State University Athletics Operations staff, the Athletic Event Worker supports the successful execution of athletic events and daily facility operations hosted by Norfolk State University Athletics. This position assists in various areas of event operations, including ticket sales, ticket taking, parking, security, ushering, event setup, venue maintenance, and other operational responsibilities as assigned. Athletic Event Workers may also assist with daily operations assignments, including stadium security, facility monitoring, and support for external events hosted within NSU Athletics facilities. Candidates must be available to work during the 2026 Football Season to remain eligible for assignments associated with other Norfolk State University athletic events, including baseball, softball, track and field, women's flag football, tennis, and volleyball.
The position requires the ability to perform duties that may involve lifting, extensive walking, and/or prolonged periods of standing.
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
The Athletic Event Worker is expected to demonstrate professionalism, dependability, strong customer service, effective communication, and a willingness to assist wherever needed to support successful athletic events. Employees must work collaboratively with Athletics staff and other event personnel while helping maintain a safe, organized, and welcoming environment for student‑athletes, spectators, guests, and the University community. Wage employees are paid an hourly rate for actual hours worked and are limited to working 1500 hours per year and can only work a maximum of 29 hours a week. Work hours must be counted on the basis of the twelve‑month period beginning May 1 of each year and April 30 of the following year. Wage employees in all agencies (all branches of government) are limited to working no more than 1500 hours during each twelve‑month period of May 1‑April 30. Should you work 1500 hours prior to April 30, your services will be terminated immediately. You will not be eligible for employment again until May 1. It is the responsibility of the employee and supervisor, as well as the Office of Human Resources, to monitor these hours to ensure compliance to policy. Wage employees may not earn leave nor do they have access to the Grievance Procedure process. They are not covered by the provision of the Virginia Personnel Act and are not entitled to the benefits afforded employees occupying classified positions.
