Norfolk State University is seeking a part-time Work-Study front desk assistant for Residence Life. You will cover front desk duties in assigned residence halls, greet residents and visitors, and enforce access policies with courtesy and professionalism.
The role requires NSU enrollment and Federal Work-Study eligibility, with shifts that may include evenings, weekends, and special events. Excellent communication and customer service are essential in this welcoming campus environment.
Work‑Study Students may be assigned to residence hall front desks, Housing & Residence Life offices, and other university locations or events. The position involves frequent interaction with students, families, visitors, and university staff and may require extended periods of standing, walking, and working at a front desk.
Wage employees are paid an hourly rate for actual hours worked and are limited to working 1500 hours per year and can only work a maximum of 29 hours a week. Work hours must be counted on the basis of the twelve‑month period beginning May1 of each year and April30 of the following year. Wage employees in all agencies (all branches of government) are limited to working no more than 1500 hours during each twelve‑month period of May1‑April30. Should you work 1500 hours prior to April30, your services will be terminated immediately. You will not be eligible for employment again until May1. It is the responsibility of the employee and supervisor, as well as the Office of Human Resources, to monitor these hours to ensure compliance to policy. Wage employees may not earn leave nor do they have access to the Grievance Procedure process. They are not covered by the provision of the Virginia Personnel Act and are not entitled to the benefits afforded employees occupying classified positions.
