Job summary

WSP is seeking a Fire & Life Safety Engineer specializing in Fire Protection of Energy Storage Systems to lead ESS designs for data center projects across the United States. You will work with the Fire and Life Safety team and SMEs to ensure code compliance and implement innovative hazard mitigation strategies.

The ideal candidate has 1–3 years of fire protection experience (ESS preferred), strong analytical and writing skills, and the ability to coordinate with multiple disciplines.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Architectural, or Fire Protection Engineering; or equivalent years of experience.
• 1–3 years of fire protection and life safety experience; ESS experience preferred.
• Excellent research skills with an analytical mindset.
• Interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with engineering and non‑engineering audiences.
• Proficiency with technical writing, office software, spreadsheets and related tools.
• Occasional travel may be required depending on project requirements.

Responsibilities

• Direct and execute the design of building MEP systems for ESS installations (fire sprinkler, smoke detection, ventilation, explosion control).
• Apply knowledge of NFPA 855, UL9540/9540A, UL1778, UL924 and International Fire Code requirements.
• Author reports and supplemental documentation to support ESS permits and analyze large-scale fire test data.
• Facilitate Hazard Mitigation Analyses as needed by code or project needs.
• Coordinate with vendors, engineers and architects to implement design changes.
• Support staffing decisions and resource allocation for project needs.
