Job summary

WSP is seeking a Fire & Life Safety Engineer specializing in Energy Storage Systems (ESS) for multiple US offices, including Troy, NY. The role focuses on directing ESS designs to meet evolving codes and project-specific requirements, collaborating with the FLS team, HMAs, and other MEP engineers on mission-critical data center projects.

Qualifications

• Related Bachelors in Electrical, Mechanical, Architectural, or Fire Protection Engineering; or equivalent years of experience.
• 1–3 years of fire protection and life safety experience, ESS preferred.
• Excellent research skills with an analytical mindset.
• Proficient interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences.
• Self-leadership with attention to detail and prioritization in a dynamic environment.
• Ability to work independently or in a team to meet objectives.
• Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, and tools.
• Occasional travel may be required depending on project requirements.

Responsibilities

• Direct and execute the design of building MEP systems for ESS installation, including sprinkler, detection, ventilation, and explosion control.
• Demonstrate knowledge of NFPA 855, UL9540/9540A, UL1778, UL924, IFC, FM Global requirements.
• Prepare reports and technical analyses to support ESS permits and design adequacy.
• Facilitate Hazard Mitigation Analyses as required by code or client needs.
• Coordinate with vendors, engineers, and architects to implement design changes.
• Support staffing and resourcing decisions for project needs.
• Promote the firm's core values and foster innovation and proactive communication.
