Job summary

WSP USA is seeking a Fire & Life Safety Engineer specializing in Fire Protection of Energy Storage Systems (ESS) for multiple offices including Troy, NY and other major U.S. cities. You will direct ESS designs to meet evolving codes and project-specific requirements, collaborating with the FLS team and other engineers.

Your role includes hazard mitigation, code analysis, report writing, and presenting fire risk assessments to authorities. Travel may be required as projects span the U.S.

Qualifications

• Related Bachelors in Electrical, Mechanical, Architectural, or Fire Protection Engineering; or equivalent years of experience.
• 1-3 years of fire protection and life safety experience, ESS experience is preferred.
• Excellent research skills with an analytical mindset.
• Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
• Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
• Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Responsibilities

• Direct and execute the design of the building MEP systems required for the installation of ESS.
• In-depth knowledge of NFPA 855, UL9540, UL9540A, UL1778, UL924, International Fire Code, FM Global requirements.
• Author reports and prepare supplemental documentation to support permits for electrochemical energy storage systems.
• Facilitate Hazard Mitigation Analyses when required by code or best practice.
• Present fire risk assessments to authorities having jurisdiction.
• Coordinate reviews of drawings and implement design modifications as necessary.
• Assist engineers with resourcing inputs for staffing and project needs.
• Support innovation and effectively communicate engineering concepts to clients and internal teams.
