The New York Public Library is seeking an ESOL Instructor for Muhlenberg Library to deliver adult English language and literacy instruction in person on Saturdays and online as needed. Responsibilities

  • Teach ESOL classes that promote English language proficiency and digital literacy for students assessed at NRS levels 1-6.
  • Follow the prescribed curriculum in a communicative language teaching environment during class-time.
  • Submit lesson plans that demonstrate communicative language teaching in alignment with the prescribed curriculum.
  • Instruct adult ESOL students in classes and learning experiences, which will lead to the achievement of their educational and personal goals.
  • Assist in the managed enrollment process to recruit students and maintain student records.
  • Participate in prescribed professional development pertaining to adult basic education and Library strategic priorities.

Compensation: $45.00 / hour


Description

Overview


Adult English Language and Literacy (AELL) is the direct service provider of ESOL and adult literacy instruction for The New York Public Library (NYPL). Professional teachers facilitate free instruction to adult patrons in reading, writing, speaking and listening from a 0 to 8th grade level in both in-person and online classes. Instruction is offered in three, 10-week cycles and one, 4-week summer cycle.


*Please note this position is for our fall cycle of classes which lasts 10 weeks and takes place between September and December.*


Must be available to work at Muhlenberg Library (Manhattan) on Saturdays from 10:00am-2:00pm and 2:30pm-4:30pm

Schedule



  • 8 hours per week

  • Saturdays from 10:00am-2:00pm and 2:30-4:30pm with 2 hours of paid prep time per week Please note that the 2:30-4:30pm class is currently funded through June 30th. If funding is not renewed the position will transition to 5 hours per week (10am-2:00pm Saturday class and 1 hour of paid prep time)

  • This position works on a cycle basis (Three 10-week instructional cycles in the fall, winter, spring and one 4 week summer cycle)
