Job summary

Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) in San Jose, CA is seeking a per diem Emergency Veterinary Assistant to support the team during busy shifts. You will assist with triage, treatments, anesthesia setup, and patient care alongside licensed professionals.

We value growth, mentorship, and learning in a fast-paced, pet-focused ER. Training is provided for RECOVER certification and advanced responsibilities with guided pathways.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Enrolled in AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program a plus.
• 1+ years in a veterinary assistant role (emergency or specialty experience is a bonus!).
• Basic computer skills and an understanding of practice management software and EMR/electronic medical records.
• Excellent communicator when collaborating with pet parents and your team.
• Fine motor skills for handling patients and medical equipment.
• Ability to stand for prolonged hours and lift up to 25 kg solo (40 kg with assistance).
• Willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotating basis.

Responsibilities

• Be the first warm welcome and steady support, triaging incoming patients and guiding them toward care.
• Assist with treatments, nursing care, and diagnostics (bloodwork, imaging, catheter placement, oxygen support).
• Work with credentialed technicians and veterinarians to set up and monitor anesthesia and sedation.
• Set up and manage IV fluids, blood transfusions, and medication administration.
• Support care in outpatient or inpatient settings, from exam room to treatment area.
• Join patient rounds to maintain continuity of care.
• Learn CPR and pursue RECOVER Certified Rescuer training.
