Job summary

VEG for Pets is seeking a per diem Emergency Veterinary Assistant to be at the heart of our fast-paced ER team. You will support triage, treatments, and monitoring, while comforting pet parents and learning on the job.

You'll work with credentialed techs and veterinarians, grow skills through guided pathways, and have opportunities to pursue advancing responsibilities within a leading veterinary emergency network.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Enrolled in AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program is a plus.
• 1+ years in a veterinary assistant role (emergency or specialty experience a bonus).
• Basic computer skills and EMR experience.
• Excellent communicator with pet parents and team.
• Fine motor skills for handling patients and medical equipment.
• Ability to stand for prolonged hours and lift up to 25 kg (55 lb).
• Willingness to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

• Be the first warm welcome and triage incoming patients and guide them toward care.
• Assist with treatments, nursing care, and diagnostics including bloodwork and imaging.
• Work with credentialed technicians and veterinarians during anesthesia and sedation.
• Set up and monitor IV fluids, blood transfusions, and medication administration.
• Support care in outpatient or inpatient settings from exam room to treatment area.
• Join patient rounds to maintain continuity of care.
• Learn CPR and RECOVER Certified Rescuer training (provided).
• Grow into advanced duties like anesthesia support and ultrasound via training pathways.
