Job summary

Markel is seeking an experienced Claims professional to handle average to moderately complex casualty claims within a collaborative, hybrid environment in the United States. You will investigate, evaluate, negotiate, and settle claims, coordinate with defense counsel, and maintain accurate claim files.

You will analyze policy language, establish reserves, and communicate clearly with insureds, brokers, and internal teams while adhering to regulatory requirements and Markel's standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant claims experience required.
• 2-4 years of casualty claims handling experience; experience with environmental, products liability, life sciences, professional liability, bodily injury, or property damage claims is preferred.
• Working knowledge of claim investigation, coverage analysis, liability assessment, reserve evaluation, litigation management, and settlement practices.
• Ability to interpret commercial insurance policies and identify issues requiring escalation or additional guidance.

Responsibilities

• Manage an assigned caseload of environmental, products liability, life sciences, professional liability, and general liability claims of moderate complexity.
• Conduct timely claim investigations, including review of pleadings, contracts, medical records, expert materials, and other relevant documentation.
• Analyze policy language and identify coverage issues, escalating complex matters and preparing reservation of rights or other coverage correspondence with appropriate guidance.
• Evaluate liability, damages, and exposure and establish and maintain appropriate claim reserves within assigned authority.
• Develop and execute claim handling plans, document material developments, and maintain accurate and timely claim files.
• Select, direct, and monitor defense counsel, consultants, and experts in accordance with litigation management guidelines.
• Review litigation strategy, budgets, legal bills, and case evaluations and address performance or cost concerns as appropriate.
• Negotiate settlements within granted authority and prepare clear recommendations when additional authority is required.
• Participate in mediations, settlement conferences, and other claim-related meetings as needed.
• Communicate effectively with insureds, brokers, counsel, claimants, and internal stakeholders regarding claim status and strategy.
• Prepare concise claim summaries, reports, and updates for management and underwriting.
• Identify and promptly escalation significant coverage, severity, legal, regulatory, or reputational issues.
• Maintain compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, service standards, and company claim handling practices.
