Job summary

WSP USA seeks a Fire & Life Safety Engineer focused on Energy Storage Systems to lead ESS fire protection design for data centers and mission-critical facilities. You will coordinate with the FLS team, ensure code compliance (NFPA 855, UL9540/9540A), and review designs for safety and reliability.

Ideal candidates have a bachelor’s in engineering, 1–3 years in fire protection, strong communication skills, and a commitment to hazard mitigation and continuous improvement on challenging projects.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Architectural, or Fire Protection Engineering; or equivalent years of experience.
1-3 years of fire protection and life safety experience; ESS experience preferred.
Excellent research skills with an analytical mindset.
Proficient communication skills; ability to convey ideas to engineering and non-engineering audiences.

Responsibilities

Direct and execute the design of the building MEP systems required for the installation of ESS, including fire sprinkler, smoke detection, ventilation, and explosion control systems.
Ensure compliance with NFPA 855, UL9540, UL9540A, UL1778, UL924, International Fire Code, FM Global requirements, and hazard mitigation.
Author reports and prepare supplemental documentation to support permits for electrochemical energy storage systems.
Present fire risk assessments to authorities having jurisdiction.
