Job summary

UNC Health in Chapel Hill offers a Student Nurse Extern I position in the Emergency Department, May 24–July 31, 2027. You will work with an RN partner within the Patient Services team, gaining hands-on experience in vital signs, patient care activities, and unit procedures under supervision.

Eligibility includes enrollment in an accredited nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months, a Nursing Assistant I credential, and BLS certification.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; enrollment in accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Nursing Assistant I certification with NC DHHS and BLS certification required.

Responsibilities

• Observe, collect, and document patient information and report significant changes.
• Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provide routine patient care including vitals, measurements, specimen collection, wound care, and ROM exercises.
• Assist with activities of daily living and 1:1 patient interactions under RN supervision.
• Support unit operations: cleaning, restocking, transporting, and clerical tasks as needed.
• Reinforce teaching and assist with examinations and procedures under supervision.
• In psychiatric settings, support therapy, de-escalation, and monitor milieu for safety.
