Job summary

UNC Health in Hillsborough, NC seeks a Student Nurse Extern I for the Emergency Department. This temporary full-time role partners with an RN to deliver patient care within the Nursing Assistant I scope, providing hands-on experience for licensure preparation.

The extern will observe, document, assist with admissions and routine treatments, and support patient education under supervision, with 1:1 preceptor Training and classes to meet individual needs.

Qualifications

• Fluent in verbal and written English language.
• Ability to organize and prioritize assignments in the delivery of patient care.
• Basic computer skills.
• Lift and carry 40-50 lbs. Examples: Push/pull patients on a bed, stretcher (requires 29 lbs. push force).
• Frequent to continuous standing/walking.
• CPR may be required as part of patient care.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports significant changes.
• Assists with admission, orientation, and discharge processes.
• Provides care/treatments per plan of care including vital signs, wound care, catheter care, glucose checks, and ROM exercises.
• Provides direct personal care with activities of daily living and assistance with ambulation.
• Performs indirect care tasks such as cleaning, restocking, related clerical functions.
• Supports patient education and assists in emergencies with equipment and supplies.
• In the psychiatric setting, supports outcomes and safety measures under supervision.
