Job summary

Scripps Health in San Diego seeks a Patient Service Specialist - ED to join the Access Services/ED team. This full-time role (72 hours per pay period) involves front-desk registration, billing inquiries, and scheduling with a patient-centered approach.

You will handle patient check-in/check-out, verify demographics and insurance, collect payments, and coordinate referrals and authorizations with accuracy and empathy.

Qualifications

• Must demonstrate proficiency with computer applications and strong mathematical skills to handle monies.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills.
• Strong organizational and analytical skills; ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
• 2 years of experience in customer service or healthcare/medical office environment (preferred).
• Knowledge of medical terminology, insurance and billing guidelines, and CPT/HCPCS codes (preferred).

Responsibilities

• Interact with patients, payers, and providers to gather information for accurate registration and insurance verification.
• Receive and route messages; manage billing and payment inquiries.
• Manage patient check-in and check-out, verify demographics, insurance, and collect payments.
• Assist patients with eligibility, discuss payment arrangements and provide price estimates.
• Schedule and reschedule patient appointments; document and route messages as needed.
• Coordinate scheduling, meetings, and travel as needed; assist with reports and statistics.
• Display proactive customer service; escalate concerns when necessary.
• Support clinical staff as part of the patient care team.
