Description

POSITION SUMMARY: The Education Services Manager is responsible for the overall performance of the Education Services department. They lead the development, implementation and evaluation of programming for kids, teens, families, and classrooms to help create the next generation of animal advocates and provide an access point for the community to engage with Seattle Humane. They directly supervise the Education Services Specialist, as well as seasonal department staff and volunteers, and work with the External Relations Director to achieve the organization’s budgetary and strategic goals. They provide institutional leadership and support the mission and values of Seattle Humane.

KEY OR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Develops, maintains, and implements educational programs, workshops, and other learning opportunities to serve Seattle Humane’s strategic and budgetary goals
  • Develops and maintains program resources, including public-facing website content, classroom curriculum, and online/print materials
  • Reports to the External Relations Director; keeps clear and open lines of communication and promptly reports concerns or issues
  • Directly supervises the Education Services Specialist, as well as seasonal department staff:
    • Hires, trains, schedules and motivates team members to provide for their growth and to maximize their potential for the good of the organization
    • Coaches team members to meet established goals and objectives
    • Verifies that organization and department policies and procedures are being followed while attaining high standards of customer service
    • Provides timely communication of department or organization updates to department staff
    • Conducts department staff performance reviews according to organizational timelines
  • Responsible for the overall performance of department volunteer program(s):
    • Monitors effectiveness of volunteer assignments
    • Provides support and training
    • Maintains a high level of communication with the Volunteer Services department regarding volunteer position updates and recruitment needs
  • Prepares and submits department reports and/or other data as requested, including monthly statistics, monthly P&L reports and grant-related documentation
  • Monitors program inventory and submits department purchase orders and expense reports following Seattle Humane guidelines and timelines
  • Assists in writing or editing department communication when appropriate
  • Supports media or special event requests as needed
  • Performs routine or assigned cleaning procedures in classroom and meeting spaces utilized by program activities; keeps rooms and storage spaces clean and orderly
  • Maintains and models a high level of customer service towards Seattle Humane clients and external partners

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

  • Adheres to Seattle Humane Standard Operating Procedures
  • Promotes a positive, supportive and cooperative work environment based on mutual respect and open communication
  • Attends department, leadership and full staff meetings as requested and participates with ideas and suggestions designed to improve shelter services programs and working conditions

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Directly supervises the Education Services Specialist, as well as seasonal department staff and volunteers

COMMUNICATION / INTERPERSONAL CONTACT:

  • Daily communication with supervisor regarding concerns, ideas and updates
  • Daily communication with staff and volunteers in person and through meetings, telephone, mail, Teams or e-mail
  • Regular verbal and written contact with community partners, students, teachers, volunteers or the public over the telephone, in person or by e-mail.
  • May act as representative of Seattle Humane for donor and media events
Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE / EDUCATION OR TRAINING:

  • At least one year of experience as a classroom or community-based educator. Experience developing curriculum is required
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate workshops, presentations and classes for a variety of age groups required
  • Previous experience supervising and/or training staff and volunteers highly preferred
  • Knowledge of classroom management techniques is highly preferred
  • Basic knowledge of animal health and behavior helpful
  • Comfortable working in Microsoft Office programs; experience with registration, design & database software and data entry helpful
  • Customer service experience preferred
  • Knowledge of a second language or culture is valued

LICENSES / CERTIFICATES REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in child development, education, or related field
  • Capable of being certified in (human) CPR/first aid and mental health first aid
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license with good driving record

PHYSICAL / MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Requires the ability to solve problems and make clear decisions quickly
  • Must possess the organizational and planning skills to determine work priorities and schedules
  • Must have good attention to detail and be able to concentrate and produce accurate work despite frequent interruptions
  • Must be able to organize and manage multiple and complex projects
  • Must be able to focus on strategic goals and objectives
  • Must possess the ability to be sensitive to other opinions, perspectives or cultures
  • Must feel comfortable de-escalating situations with angry, confused, distraught and/or irrational people
  • Must exhibit initiative and motivation in performing all duties
  • Must be able to see clearly with a least one eye and have good dexterity and reflexes, especially when restraining or moving an animal
  • Must be able to lift and carry at least 50 pounds with or without accommodation; crouch and bend at the waist and kneel; must be able to control dogs up to 200 pounds when on a leash

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • General office and animal shelter environment. When handling animals, there is a potential of animal bites, exposure to zoonotic diseases, animal dander and noise. Potential for working with angry or irate customers. Involves entering and leaving work areas alone and at night.
  • Equipment Used: Desktop and laptopcomputers,multi-line telephone,multi-functioncopy machine, videoand projectionequipment,Seattle Humanevehicle, animal leashes,harnesses andcarriers.
  • Work Hours: Full-time non-exempt position. 40 hours per week scheduled, five days a week. May include evening and/or weekend hours for events, programs or meetings.
