Job summary

Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas is seeking a Direct Support Professional to assist individuals with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities in their homes in Chesapeake, VA. Under supervision, the DSP provides direct care and helps residents learn daily living skills.

You will support safety and well-being, document activities in the electronic system, and participate in planning with families and the PCP team.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum 1 year of experience in intellectual/developmental disabilities.
• Medication Administration Certification preferred but not required by end of introductory period.
• Must pass trainings and orientation; keep required certifications up to date.
• Computer skills are required for documentation.
• Written and verbal communication skills must be clear and professional.
• Problem solving ability and background checks/drug testing clearance.
• Bilingual abilities are a plus.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct care and support to individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities.
• Assist with daily living activities and household tasks.
• Support individuals in developing skills to live with less supervision.
• Monitor and document medications and health needs as prescribed.
• Coordinate with families and planning teams, including PCP.
• Assist with community activities and transportation as needed.
• Ensure safety, sanitation, and compliance with policies and procedures.
