Job summary

Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas is seeking a Direct Support Professional to assist individuals with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities in their homes. Under supervision, you will provide direct care, support daily living skills, and help participants participate in community activities.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; IEP acceptable.
• At least 1 year of experience in the IDD field; exceptions possible with supervision.
• Medication administration certification preferred, but may be required later.
• Must complete trainings and orientation; keep required certifications current.
• Computer skills required for documentation; clear written and verbal communication.
• Background checks and drug testing required; bilingual is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct care and support as identified by the PCP; coordinate with planning team.
• Teach and assist with household tasks, meals, budgeting, and shopping.
• Help people develop daily living skills in alignment with their plan.
• Assist with medication administration and independence in taking meds.
• May provide first aid or CPR; participate in crisis intervention if needed.
• Plan and participate in social activities; document progress in EHR.
• Transport people or assist with mobility for appointments and events.
• Attend staff meetings and trainings; ensure policy compliance.
