Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled diesel mechanic to perform repairs and preventative maintenance on a wide range of heavy equipment in a large garage setting. You will diagnose electrical, hydraulic, and diesel engine issues, weld as needed, and ensure safe operation while complying with hazardous waste handling and shop safety rules.

Overtime may be required during inclement weather or emergencies.

Qualifications

• Requires 1.5 years of relevant experience or equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license; Class A CDL within 6 months.
• Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Overtime may be required during emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Perform skilled mechanical repairs on electrical and hydraulic systems.
• Diagnose and repair diesel powered equipment; maintenance on diesel engines and transmissions.
• Weld or fabricate as needed; modify equipment to improve production.
• Maintain shop safety and hazardous waste handling per regulations; assist in field service calls.
