Responsibilities of the Dental Assistant include:
  1. Greeting and directing patients, providing routine information on procedures, and escorting patients in and out of the service area.
  2. Calming and soothing anxious, nervous, or uncooperative patients throughout their treatment.
  3. Reviewing schedule, planned procedures, and additional equipment/instrument needs with the provider prior to the start of the clinical session.
  4. Preparing the room and instruments for scheduled treatment.
  5. Mixing materials and passing instruments to the dental provider as requested.
  6. Instructing patients on proper dental care and follow-up, as directed by a licensed provider.
  7. Taking dental impressions and producing study models.
  8. Preparing models according to established procedures for delivery to outside lab facilities.
  9. Logging lab case information upon submission and return.
  10. Taking, developing, mounting, and filing dental radiographs that meet departmental standards for quality and readability.
  11. Understanding and utilizing proper positioning techniques when taking panoramic and/or cephalometric films.
  12. Checking the quality of images and reviewing with the provider before re-taking to minimize radiation exposure.
  13. Taking digital photographs as instructed.
  14. Scanning physical (non-digital) images into electronic dental records, if required.
  15. Charting teeth and conditions in the patient's electronic dental record as directed by the licensed provider.
  16. Maintaining cleanliness of patient areas, workrooms, and equipment.
  17. Cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining dental instruments.
  18. Handling sterile instruments and materials according to standard procedures.
  19. Ensuring operatory is cleaned and sterilized prior to patient examinations.
  20. Monitoring equipment and reporting problems or repair needs promptly to the supervisor.
  21. Monitoring the status of the soiled utility room.
  22. Delivering and retrieving instruments and cassettes from the Central Sterilization Department.
  23. Restocking dental supplies in treatment rooms and the Emergency Department.
  24. Identifying and resolving discrepancies in lab cases sent or returned.
Qualifications for the Dental Assistant include:
  • Training in Orthodontic Dental Assisting
  • DANB Radiation Health & Safety certification
  • Dental Assistant License
  • High School diploma or equivalent plus completion of a CODA-accredited program
  • Specialization in Dental Assisting
