DELI CLERK
PURPOSE STATEMENT: To maximize sales and profit in the Deli Department through courteous customer service.
SIGNIFICANT JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Greet all customers, respond to questions/requests, and explain store policies courteously.
- Wrap, package, and sell products such as sandwiches, pizza, salads, sliced fruits, vegetables, meats, cheese, desserts, party trays, garnishes, samples, and fried foods.
- Process customer purchases quickly and accurately using electronic cash register, scanner, and scale.
- Review the communication board daily for updates and follow posted guidelines for sampling and announcements.
- Prepare and organize the cooler/freezer/preparation area, unload trucks, verify merchandise, inspect for shortages/damage, and code-date all items.
- Adhere to health codes and regulations; clean department areas and equipment safely.
- Transport cases to sales floor or storage, open cases, and stock products, checking for freshness and proper placement.
- Ensure safety by practicing store safety rules and reporting hazards; remove broken containers and debris promptly.
- Operate equipment such as balers, slicers, and fryers safely (must be 18+ for certain equipment).
- Evaluate product quality, handle damaged or unsalable items, and perform markdowns as needed.
- Check case and cooler/freezer temperatures four times daily and record readings.
- Report out-of-stock conditions to management.
- Stock and replenish display cases and counters throughout the store.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned to support store operations and customer service.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
- Basic math skills and ability to count.
- Ability to give and receive complex verbal instructions.
- Stable work and educational history.
- Ability to read and write English, including instructions, labels, and reports.
- Judgment skills for product placement, display, and customer interaction.
- Ability to open cases and stock without damaging products.
- Ability to clearly price and label products.
- Good interpersonal communication skills.
PREFERRED:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior related experience.
- Experience operating equipment like slicers, balers, and fryers (must be 18+).
TASKS OF THE JOB
This position generally requires:
- Mobility: moving, opening cases, inspecting products, building displays, and cleaning within 100 yards.
- Work on tile or concrete for up to 8 hours.
- Lifting up to 50 lbs. from 6 to 84 inches high.
- Moving items up to 15 yards.
- Handling signage, trash, and equipment operation.
- Climbing ladders and shelving up to 3 feet high.
- Stocking and rotating products on shelves.
- Responding to questions and system sounds, reading labels, and maintaining safety and cleanliness.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Inside work with temperature variations, dust, and humidity from equipment and storage areas.
