DELI CLERK

PURPOSE STATEMENT: To maximize sales and profit in the Deli Department through courteous customer service.

SIGNIFICANT JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Greet all customers, respond to questions/requests, and explain store policies courteously.
2. Wrap, package, and sell products such as sandwiches, pizza, salads, sliced fruits, vegetables, meats, cheese, desserts, party trays, garnishes, samples, and fried foods.
3. Process customer purchases quickly and accurately using electronic cash register, scanner, and scale.
4. Review the communication board daily for updates and follow posted guidelines for sampling and announcements.
5. Prepare and organize the cooler/freezer/preparation area, unload trucks, verify merchandise, inspect for shortages/damage, and code-date all items.
6. Adhere to health codes and regulations; clean department areas and equipment safely.
7. Transport cases to sales floor or storage, open cases, and stock products, checking for freshness and proper placement.
8. Ensure safety by practicing store safety rules and reporting hazards; remove broken containers and debris promptly.
9. Operate equipment such as balers, slicers, and fryers safely (must be 18+ for certain equipment).
10. Evaluate product quality, handle damaged or unsalable items, and perform markdowns as needed.
11. Check case and cooler/freezer temperatures four times daily and record readings.
12. Report out-of-stock conditions to management.
13. Stock and replenish display cases and counters throughout the store.
14. Perform additional tasks as assigned to support store operations and customer service.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

1. Basic math skills and ability to count.
2. Ability to give and receive complex verbal instructions.
3. Stable work and educational history.
4. Ability to read and write English, including instructions, labels, and reports.
5. Judgment skills for product placement, display, and customer interaction.
6. Ability to open cases and stock without damaging products.
7. Ability to clearly price and label products.
8. Good interpersonal communication skills.

PREFERRED:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Prior related experience.
3. Experience operating equipment like slicers, balers, and fryers (must be 18+).

TASKS OF THE JOB

This position generally requires:

1. Mobility: moving, opening cases, inspecting products, building displays, and cleaning within 100 yards.
2. Work on tile or concrete for up to 8 hours.
3. Lifting up to 50 lbs. from 6 to 84 inches high.
4. Moving items up to 15 yards.
5. Handling signage, trash, and equipment operation.
6. Climbing ladders and shelving up to 3 feet high.
7. Stocking and rotating products on shelves.
8. Responding to questions and system sounds, reading labels, and maintaining safety and cleanliness.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Inside work with temperature variations, dust, and humidity from equipment and storage areas.
