DELI CLERK

PURPOSE STATEMENT

To maximize sales and profit in the Deli Department through courteous customer service.

Significant Job Responsibilities

1. Greet all customers, respond to customer questions/requests and explain store policies courteously.
2. Wrap, package and sell products: sandwiches, pizza, salads, sliced fruits, vegetables, sliced meats, cheese, desserts, party trays, garnishes, samples, fried foods.
3. Process customer purchases quickly and accurately with cash register, scanner, and scale.
4. Review the department Communication Board daily for updates and follow posted guidelines for sampling and announcements.
5. Prepare/organize the cooler/freezer/preparation area, unload trucks, verify deliveries, inspect for shortages/damage, sort cases, and code-date items.
6. Adhere to health codes and regulations; clean department equipment and surfaces safely.
7. Transport cases to sales floor, cooler, or freezer, open cases, stock products, check dates, and rotate stock.
8. Ensure safety of all by following store safety rules and reporting hazards.
9. Operate equipment such as baler, case cutter, pallet jack, slicer, scales, fryer, stove, etc. (must be 18+ for certain equipment).
10. Evaluate product quality, handle damaged or unsalable items, and mark down prices as needed.
11. Monitor case and cooler/freezer temperatures four times daily.
12. Record out-of-stock conditions and report to management.
13. Stock and replenish display cases and counters throughout the store.
14. Perform additional tasks as assigned to support store operations.

Qualifications

REQUIRED:

• Basic math skills and ability to count.
• Ability to give/receive complex verbal instructions and operate equipment.
• Stable work and educational history.
• Ability to read/write English, including labels, instructions, and reports.
• Judgment in merchandise placement, product display, and customer interaction.
• Ability to open cases and stock without damage.
• Ability to clearly label products and communicate effectively.
• Good interpersonal skills.

Preferred:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Prior related experience.
• Experience operating equipment like baler, slicer, fryer, etc. (must be 18+ for some equipment).

Tasks of the Job – Generally Requires:

• Mobility for receiving, stocking, building displays, and cleaning tasks within 100 yards.
• Work on tile or concrete surfaces up to 8 hours.
• Lift up to 50 lbs. and move items up to 15 yards.
• Reach, grasp, twist, climb, and handle various tools and products safely.
• Handle cash and vouchers, operate signage and packaging equipment.
• Respond to sound cues and read labels, signs, and reports.

Work Environment

Inside work with temperature variations, dust, humidity, and noise from equipment and back areas.
