DELI CLERK
PURPOSE STATEMENT
To maximize sales and profit in the Deli Department through courteous customer service.
Significant Job Responsibilities
- Greet all customers, respond to questions/requests, and explain store policies courteously.
- Wrap, package, and sell products such as sandwiches, pizza, salads, sliced fruits, vegetables, meats, cheese, desserts, party trays, garnishes, samples, and fried foods.
- Process customer purchases quickly and accurately using electronic cash registers, scanners, and scales.
- Review the daily communication board for updates and follow posted guidelines for sampling and announcements.
- Prepare and organize the cooler/freezer/preparation area for receipt of merchandise, unload trucks, verify deliveries, inspect for shortages or damage, and code-date all items.
- Adhere to health codes and regulations; clean department areas and equipment safely.
- Transport cases to sales floor, cooler, or freezer, open cases, stock products, check dates, and rotate stock.
- Ensure safety for all by following store safety rules and reporting hazards.
- Operate equipment such as balers, slicers, pallet jacks, and others (must be 18+ for certain equipment).
- Evaluate product quality, move damaged or unsalable items, and mark down products per policy.
- Monitor and record temperatures, out-of-stock conditions, and restock display cases.
- Perform miscellaneous tasks as assigned, including coverage during peak periods.
Qualifications
REQUIRED:
- Basic math skills and ability to count.
- Ability to give and receive complex verbal instructions.
- Stable work and educational history.
- Ability to read and write English, including instructions, labels, and reports.
- Judgment in merchandise placement, display, and customer interaction.
- Ability to open cases and stock without damage.
- Ability to clearly price and label products.
- Good interpersonal communication skills.
Preferred:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior related experience.
- Experience operating specific equipment listed above (must be 18+ for some).
Tasks of the Job – Generally Requires
- Mobility for receiving, stocking, building displays, and cleaning.
- Lifting up to 50 lbs. and moving items up to 15 yards.
- Climbing ladders and shelving up to 3 feet high.
- Handling cash, vouchers, and store transactions.
- Using and responding to the intercom and reading labels, signs, and reports.
Work Environment
Inside work with temperature variations, dust, and humidity from various store areas.
