DELI CLERK
PURPOSE STATEMENT: To maximize sales and profit in the Deli Department through courteous customer service.
SIGNIFICANT JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Greet all customers, respond to questions/requests, and explain store policies courteously.
- Wrap, package, and sell products such as sandwiches, pizza, salads, sliced fruits, vegetables, meats, cheese, desserts, party trays, garnishes, samples, and fried foods.
- Process customer purchases accurately using electronic cash registers, scanners, and scales.
- Review the communication board daily for updates and follow guidelines for sampling and announcements.
- Prepare and organize the cooler/freezer/preparation area for receipt of merchandise, verify deliveries, inspect for damage, and code-date items.
- Adhere to health codes and regulations; clean the department thoroughly.
- Transport cases to the sales floor or storage areas, open cases, and stock products in designated areas, ensuring proper rotation and freshness.
- Ensure safety by following store safety rules and reporting hazards immediately. Remove broken containers and packing materials promptly.
- Operate equipment safely, including balers, slicers, scales, fryers, and others (must be 18+ for certain equipment).
- Evaluate product quality, move damaged or unsalable items for reprocessing or markdowns.
- Monitor case and cooler temperatures four times daily and record readings.
- Report out-of-stock conditions to the manager.
- Stock and replenish display cases and counters throughout the store.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned to ensure excellent customer service during peak times.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
- Basic math skills and ability to count.
- Ability to give and receive complex verbal instructions.
- Stable work and educational history.
- Ability to read and write English, including instructions, labels, and reports.
- Judgment in merchandise placement and display preparation.
- Ability to open cases and stock without damaging products.
- Ability to price and label products clearly.
- Good interpersonal communication skills.
PREFERRED:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior related experience.
- Experience operating equipment like slicers, balers, fryers, etc. (must be 18+ for certain equipment).
TASKS OF THE JOB
This position generally requires:
- Mobility to perform receiving, stocking, and display setup within 100 yards.
- Work on tile or concrete for up to 8 hours.
- Lift up to 50 lbs. from 6 inches to 84 inches overhead or onto storage racks.
- Move up to 50 lbs. over 15 yards.
- Handle signage, open cases, and remove debris.
- Reach and handle products at various heights.
- Handle cash, vouchers, and store supplies.
- Use and respond to equipment and system signals.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Inside work with temperature and humidity variations from equipment and storage areas.
