DELI CLERK
PURPOSE STATEMENT: To maximize sales and profit in the Deli Department through courteous customer service.
SIGNIFICANT JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Greet customers, respond to questions/requests, and explain store policies courteously.
- Wrap, package, and sell products like sandwiches, pizza, salads, fruits, vegetables, meats, cheese, desserts, party trays, garnishes, samples, and fried foods.
- Process customer purchases quickly and accurately using electronic cash registers, scanners, and scales.
- Review the communication board daily for updates and follow posted guidelines for sampling and announcements.
- Prepare and organize the cooler/freezer/preparation area for receiving merchandise; verify deliveries, inspect for shortages/damage, and code-date items.
- Adhere to all health codes and regulations; clean department areas regularly using proper equipment and chemicals.
- Transport cases to the sales floor, open cases, and stock products in designated areas, checking for freshness and proper rotation.
- Ensure safety by practicing store safety rules and reporting hazards immediately; clean up broken containers and packing materials.
- Operate equipment safely, including balers, slicers, scales, fryers, and more (must be 18+ for certain equipment).
- Evaluate product quality, handle damaged or unsalable items, and mark down prices as needed.
- Check case and cooler temperatures four times daily, recording each check.
- Report out-of-stock conditions to management.
- Stock display cases and counters throughout the store.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned to ensure excellent customer service during peak periods.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
- Basic math skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide) and counting ability.
- Ability to give and receive complex verbal instructions and use equipment properly.
- Stable work and educational history.
- Ability to read and write English; interpret instructions, labels, reports, and forms.
- Judgment in merchandise placement, display, and customer interaction.
- Ability to open cases and stock without damaging products.
- Properly price and label products for customers and cashiers.
- Good interpersonal communication skills.
PREFERRED:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior experience in similar roles.
- Experience operating equipment like balers, slicers, fryers, and other store machinery (must be 18+).
TASKS OF THE JOB
This position generally requires:
- Mobility to perform receiving, stocking, opening cases, inspecting, sorting, building displays, and cleaning within 100 yards.
- Work on tile or concrete for up to 8 hours.
- Lift up to 50 lbs. from 6 to 84 inches high.
- Move up to 50 lbs. over 15 yards.
- Handle signage, open cases, and remove trash.
- Reach and attain products on shelves and racks up to 84 inches high.
- Handle cash, vouchers, and store materials.
- Use and respond to equipment and system sounds/signals.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Inside environment with temperature and humidity variations due to refrigeration and back areas.
