DELI CLERK

PURPOSE STATEMENT: To maximize sales and profit in the Deli Department through courteous customer service.

SIGNIFICANT JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Greet all customers, respond to questions/requests, and explain store policies courteously.
  2. Wrap, package, and sell products such as sandwiches, pizza, salads, sliced fruits, vegetables, meats, cheese, desserts, party trays, garnishes, samples, and fried foods.
  3. Process customer purchases quickly and accurately using electronic cash registers, scanners, and scales.
  4. Review the department communication board daily for updates and follow posted guidelines for sampling and announcements.
  5. Prepare and organize the cooler/freezer/preparation area for receiving merchandise, verify deliveries, inspect for shortages/damage, and code-date all items.
  6. Adhere to health codes and regulations, and maintain cleanliness of the department.
  7. Transport cases to the sales floor, open cases, and stock/display products, ensuring proper rotation and freshness.
  8. Ensure safety of all by following store safety rules and reporting hazards immediately.
  9. Operate equipment such as balers, case cutters, pallet jacks, and others safely and correctly.
  10. Evaluate product quality, handle damaged or unsalable items, and perform markdowns as necessary.
  11. Monitor and record cooler temperatures four times daily.
  12. Report out-of-stock conditions to management.
  13. Stock and replenish display cases and counters throughout the store.
  14. Perform additional tasks assigned by supervisors to ensure excellent customer service.
QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

  1. Basic math skills and ability to count.
  2. Ability to give and receive complex verbal instructions.
  3. Stable work and educational history.
  4. Ability to read and write English, understand instructions, labels, and reports.
  5. Judgment in merchandise placement, display, and customer interactions.
  6. Ability to open cases and stock without damaging products.
  7. Ability to clearly price and label products.
  8. Good interpersonal communication skills.

PREFERRED:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Prior related experience.
  3. Experience operating equipment like balers, slicers, scales, fryers, etc. (must be 18+ for certain equipment).
TASKS OF THE JOB

This position generally requires mobility, ability to work on tile or concrete for up to 8 hours, lift up to 50 lbs., and perform various physical tasks including reaching, grasping, climbing, and handling equipment and merchandise. The work environment involves indoor conditions with temperature variations and dust/humidity. The role includes handling cash and store transactions, maintaining safety, and supporting store operations.
