Job summary

University of Iowa is seeking a Custodian I to perform custodial duties across campus facilities. Under direct supervision, you will clean all areas, operate floor care equipment, replace light bulbs, and assist with linens and restocking.

The schedule runs 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, with every other weekend and rotating days off, and occasional overtime may be available. Join the Division of Student Life to support safe, clean, and welcoming environments for students.

Qualifications

• Ability to read, write and follow directions.
• Experience in physically demanding positions and lifting up to 50 lbs.
• Experience interacting with customers.
• Willingness to work in environments with varying temperatures and noise levels.
• Ability to use commercial cleaning equipment.

Responsibilities

• Cleans all areas of a building.
• Performs floor care including vacuuming, shampooing, sweeping, mopping, stripping, scrubbing, waxing and buffing.
• Thoroughly cleans restrooms with specialized equipment.
• Cleans glass surfaces, ceilings and walls; climbs ladders up to 12 feet as needed.
• Replaces light bulbs and cleans fixtures using ladders as required.
• Makes beds and handles linens; refills disposables and disinfects surfaces.
• Reports breakage and needed repairs.
• Moves furniture, delivers supplies, and removes draperies for cleaning.
• Collects and disposes of trash in and around buildings.
• Cleans exterior spaces, including sidewalks and entrances; snow/ice removal as needed.
• Locks/unlocks doors as required.

Job description

Position Summary

Under direct supervision, performs custodial work required for the general maintenance of buildings. The shift for these positions is 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, working every other weekend with rotating days off. Occasional overtime may be available to cover absences and during peak periods of operation.

Specific Job Duties & Tasks

• Performs cleaning in all areas of a building.
• Performs cleaning of all floor areas such as vacuuming, shampooing, sweeping, mopping, stripping, scrubbing, waxing, and buffing.
• Thoroughly clean a high number of restrooms using a specialized machine.
• Cleans and washes all glass surfaces, ceilings and walls. The use of a ladder up to 12 feet in height may be required.
• Replaces light bulbs and cleans light fixtures, using a ladder as required.
• Makes beds and handles both clean and soiled linens. Refills holder of disposable items, such as soap, bathroom tissue, paper towels, etc. Cleans and disinfects beds, bedside tables, overbed tables, etc., and other equipment and areas.
• Reports breakage and needed repairs.
• Moves furniture, supplies and miscellaneous equipment; removes draperies and rugs periodically for cleaning; delivers supplies to various areas.
• Collects trash from inside and outside of the buildings, emptying it into various areas.
• Performs duties in the immediate exterior of building such as sweeping sidewalks, snow and ice removal at entrances, cleaning ash pits, cleaning debris from grounds and window wells, and cleaning exterior windows.
• Locks and unlocks doors as required.
