Job summary
Ohio University is seeking a Custodial Worker 1 to perform cleaning, maintenance and general building care across campus facilities. You will follow safety guidelines, operate basic cleaning equipment, and help maintain a clean, safe environment for students and staff.
This full-time role requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work varied hours, and collaborate with a team as needed. The ideal candidate can read and follow instructions, work independently or with others, and demonstrate
Qualifications
- Knowledge of sanitation and safety methods across dining, residential, academic and admin units.
- Ability to follow written, oral, and pictorial instructions.
- Willingness to work independently or with others and maintain professional conduct.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and to use a 15 foot ladder safely.
- Familiarity with routine cleaning chemicals and safety guidelines.
Responsibilities
- Sweep, mop, strip, wax, and restore floors to standard levels.
- Clean rugs, carpets, walls, glass, and fixtures per guidelines.
- Empty trash, wash bathrooms, and sanitize drinking fountains.
- Report equipment needs and safety or security concerns.
- Assist in snow/ice removal and supplies stocking as needed.

- Candidates may contact management during the posting period to ask questions regarding the expectations of the position
- Adheres to all OSHA , CDC and/or Ohio University required safety guidelines;
- Sweeps, mops, strips, waxes, polishes and renews floor surfaces;
- Cleans and shampoos rugs and carpets;
- Washes walls; cleans, dusts and waxes furniture and fixtures following either Level 1 or Level 2 clean/sanitize/disinfect guidelines as directed***;
- Cleans glass and mirrors;
- Cleans and empties trash receptacles;
- May remove and hang drapes;
- Removes snow and ice from walkways and entrance areas;
- Reports need for equipment repair;
- Reports evidence of fire, illegal entry and theft of property;
- Checks in supplies; stocks supply areas;
- May assist in washing and sanitizing dishes, glassware, utensils, pots & pans;
- Cleans and sanitizes bathroom fixtures & drinking fountains;
- Operates dish machine/pot washer to clean and sanitize dishes, glasses, pan, etc.
- Performs other related duties as required.

- Knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in sanitation and safety areas of dining, residential, academic and administrative units;
- Ability to carry out instructions in written, oral, and pictorial form;
- Ability to work independently or with others;
- Willingness to foster a welcoming and respectful workforce and community
- Ability to read and write common vocabulary in sentence structure;
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, calculate fractions, decimals and percentages;
- Ability to apply principles to solve practical problems;
- Ability to demonstrate dexterity and skill in use of craft-associated hand and/or power tools and equipment;
- Ability to mix cleaning compounds and follow safety procedures;
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds;
- Ability to effectively use a 15 foot ladder;
- An established pattern of good work habits and performance with good interpersonal skills.
- May require valid driver’s license;
- Completion of a test may be required.
- May climb ladders;
- May be exposed to extreme temperatures;
- May be exposed to dirt, grease, odors, cramped conditions, extreme hot or cold temperatures, heights, and electrical hazards;
- May be exposed to dangerous machinery
- During Level 2 working conditions will be required to wear designated PPE up to and including full body suit, appropriate mask, etc.*

- Knowledge of custodial safety practices**
- Skill in operation of cleaning equipment** (electric scrubbers, buffers & vacuum cleaners)
- Knowledge of all applicable OSHA and/or Ohio University safety guidelines and procedures**
