Qualifications

• GS-4: Six months general experience and six months specialized experience in medical laboratory support.
• GS-4: One of several education paths includes an associate degree with a year of certified laboratory assistant training.
• GS-4: An alternative is one year of study with chemistry/biological sciences plus a year of full-time lab training.
• GS-4/GS-5/GS-6/GS-7: Various combinations of education and experience that qualify for federal lab positions.

Responsibilities

• Perform clinical laboratory tests across chemistry, hematology, microbiology, urinalysis, immunology, serology, and blood banking.
• Evaluate test results, recognize abnormal findings, and troubleshoot to ensure accuracy.
• Operate, calibrate, maintain laboratory instruments; prepare reagents, stains, and culture media; monitor quality control.
• Collect and process patient specimens; evaluate acceptability; accession and track in laboratory systems; prepare specimens for referral testing.
• Validate and document laboratory results; communicate with healthcare providers; support CAP/CLIA compliance and safety requirements.
