Job summary

FedEx Freight in Elizabeth, NJ is seeking a CDL driver/operator to train on tractor-trailer combinations and perform dock duties. Starting pay is $32.01 per hour with opportunities to gain certification and advance within a safety-focused environment.

Responsibilities include pre-trip inspections, hooking/unhooking trailers, freight handling with forklifts and pallet jacks, and ensuring proper documentation.

Qualifications

• Must possess a class A CDL or a commercial learning permit (CLP) prior to entering job classification.
• Must possess acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) based on hiring standards.
• Must meet DOT regulatory requirements under section 391 of the FMC regulations.
• Ability to count and perform basic math, with or without a calculator.
• Basic written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to hook up and break down sets of trailers that require an average lift force of approximately 100 pounds, several times a day.
• Ability to lift/carry hand freight weighing up to 100 pounds, several times a week.
• Ability to sit for extended periods of time, bend, twist, squat, climb in and out of truck.
• Ability to follow instructions and complete required training.
• Ability to work independently and/or as a team member.

Responsibilities

• Operate tractor-trailer, including doubles and straight trucks.
• Perform pre-trip, post-trip, and inter-trip safety inspections on equipment.
• Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from a tractor and/or trailer.
• Perform freight handling using forklift, pallet jack, and hand truck.
• Secure freight inside trailers using pallets, straps, and rope.
• Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary.
• Verify and complete required documentation and reports.
• Communicate with Dispatch about delays and equipment problems.
• Demonstrate internal and external customer service.
• Communicate with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs.
• Ask customers for additional business and provide leads to sales for opportunities.
• Where operationally necessary, perform job duties of a road driver or freight handler.
• Chain vehicle tires, as required.
• Comply with laws, regulations, and company policies.
• Perform other duties as required.
