Job summary

FedEx Freight is hiring for a heavy vehicle operator to drive tractor-trailer combinations, including doubles or straight trucks. Initial training focuses on education and driving skills, with duties like forklift operation and dock work.

Qualifications

• Must possess a class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or a commercial learning permit (CLP) prior to entering job classification
• Must possess acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) based on hiring standards
• Must meet all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulatory requirements under section 391 of the FMC regulations
• Ability to count and perform basic math, with or without a calculator
• Basic written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to hook up and break down sets of trailers that require an average lift force of approximately 100 pounds, several times a day

Responsibilities

• Operate tractor-trailer combination, including doubles and/or straight trucks
• Perform pre-trip, post-trip, and inter-trip safety inspections on equipment
• Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from a tractor and/or trailer
• Perform freight handling using motorized and manual equipment including forklift, pallet jack, hand truck
• Secure freight inside trailers using pallets, straps, and rope
• Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary
• Verify and complete required documentation and reports
• Collect checks for freight charges and maintain related documentation
• Comply with hazmat regulations and placarding as required
• Communicate with Dispatch regarding delays, arrivals, problems, etc.
• Provide internal and external customer service
• Communicate with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs
• Ask customers for additional business, provide leads to sales
• Where needed, perform road driver or freight handler duties
• Chain vehicle tires as required
• Follow laws and company policies
• Perform other duties as required
